Thing’s have really been popping off over here in Cambridge and London in the last few months, so much good music happening and there is a new generation of producers really making a name for themselves. Here is a lil taster of something upcoming from the man they call Bastille, who comes from a lineage of very talented musicians.

What’s up Bastille?! This will most likely be the first time people will have heard your music before, so why not tell us a little bit about yourself?
Well, my musical heritage comes from, I guess, a quite unique perspective. I started playing harmonica at the age of 10 and for a good few years after that, I played in several live bands as well taking influence from all sorts of places including Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder etc. I’ve grown up in a creative family with both my older brothers having successful careers as DJs / producers and my younger brother is currently smashing it as a graphic artist. I suppose I’ve been producing for about 10 years now myself and have been through various different styles which I think comes out in my music. About 5 years ago I started to produce drum and bass alongside the slightly more downtempo music which I was also influenced by. After a few years of trying my hand at DnB I realised that my music lent itself better to a slower tempo, after getting a brand new studio setup I decided to take a different route and instead of trying to shoehorn myself into a specific genre I trusted in my musical instincts and this mix is the result of me letting go.
So over what period of time have you really been focusing on the tracks in this mix?
A lot of these tracks come from various periods in my life but for most of them it’s probably about a year, the first dubstep track I ever made was a track called “Ten Ton Killa” which will, unfortunately, never be truly finished. In 2008 just as i was about to finish it we got broken into and I lost a lot of work, so since then it’s kinda been a fresh start.
Most of the mix is at a bpm of around 140 but i find it hard to call it ‘dubstep’ as it really sounds quite unique to me and definitely doesn’t have a wobble in sight. Is it safe to say you have not actually been a big follower of dubstep and if not, what influenced this sound?
It is true that I have not been there from the start with regards to dubstep, but I am now doing my best to keep up with a genre that’s going from strength to strength. One of the benefits of this is that I might not be drawn to all the current trends going on within that genre. Having a history in sound track music and more melodically heavy influences I feel that some of my stuff can be quite tuneful and hold more of a cinematic feel to it.
Now this mix has been a long time in the works and I could totally imagine a lot of it going off in a club, do you happen to be djing like your other brothers, and have you had a chance to play any of your music out yet?
Aside from getting access to clubs before they open to test out my tunes properly on really good sound systems I haven’t really had a chance to see the kinda of reaction these tunes will get. Coming from a live music background I’m personally more inclined to go the live route and have been working on a live set for some time now which will hopefully come to light soon.
That all sounds exciting! So have you actually had any music released previously to this?
Growing up with both my brothers I’ve had a chance to work with them on their stuff. Matt (Logistics) and I have collaborated on several tracks, a few of which came out on his second and third albums on Hospital Records. Nothing of my own has actually been released to date yet, but this is really the first time I feel ready and happy with my music to push for it to be released.
It seems like a lot of things are starting to come together for you now and many past influences are finally finding a firm ground, what do you see happening from this point onwards?
By the time this goes up my website should be live at www.bastille-music.com along with both twitter and soundcloud pages where I hope to be keeping anyone interested in my music updated. I’ve got a lot of new tunes in the pipeline, I’ve also been making full use of a few new bits of kit that will further develop my sound. This mix is just a start and I have plenty more stuff to come!
Wicked we all look forward to that! Well I think we have covered quite a bit on Bastille for now, anything else you would like to add before we wrap this up?
Not much more to say than that I look forward to hearing people’s reactions! Let me know if you’re feeling it and I’ll do my best to get some new bits up in the very near future.
Thanks to Bastille for the mix and interview, stay tuned to MC for a lot more in the future. Keep up to date with with all things in the mean time by checking out:
