SMOG – New Website & 5 Year Anniversary!!!

Founded in 2006, SMOG is an early adopter in the North American Dubstep movement. Originally an event production company based in Los Angeles, SMOG has expanded into a record label, development hub, and lifestyle brand. With frontman 12th Planet and artists such as SPL, Flinch, DLX, Noah D, and EMU at the helm of the label, they’ve released collaborations with some of the genres biggest names including Datsik, Breakage, Distance, Dr. P, Excision, Plastician, and Von D. In it’s 5 year history, SMOG has been responsible for numerous events nationwide, and dozens of releases on the label side, and has radio show with Scion Radio 17. It’s been a long road; from it’s humble beginnings on a pubs front patio, to sold out shows in LA, Miami, Chicago and Texas. SMOG isn’t going anywhere and if you’re into dubstep this is a brand you should become familiar with.

SMOG’s artist roster is as deep and rooted as the brand itself. Under it’s hood are a pack of producers and dj’s who have all contributed significantly to the development of the culture in the states. From 12th Planets undeniable accolades; SPL, Flinch and Noah D’s long history and discography; and quality releases from the likes of EMU, DLX, Pawn and Kelly Dean, the crew holds true to their original ideals and remain driven for big basslines, heavy percussion and creating a sound to that will resonate through out the world. If you follow the music and the parties in Los Angeles, then you have come across staple SMOG’s selectors like Steady, Pablo Hassan, Unit, Knyphy and resident MC Kemst. With a position cemented in bass music, SMOG continues to break new ground and develop new sounds and new artists.

DJs & MCs

There has been a lot cooking in the SMOG kitchen as of late it’s hard to know what to talk about first. I guess we can start off by telling you to go to right now. They have just launched version 2 of their site with direct access to the artists, event tickets, and everything SMOG related. Next up, we’ll plug their weekly SMOG Radio series hosted with Scion A/V. You never really know what special guests are going to be at the Compound for the show so check your local listings (or this link). Kelly Dean just dropped a monstrous single last week that has been getting alot of love on Beatport. Pawn has his debut artist album coming later this month as well as a 3 song EP from 12th Planet. Coming up next month is the debut album from Noah D. Make sure to keep on their website for updated release info; if you are going to listen to this music you might as well be informed.

Fresh off the relocation of the now infamous Dubtroit event in Orange County, the crew is happy in their new home in the Constellation Room at Galaxy Theater. We ventured down for the relaunch event of which you can check out recap photos here. We’ve also been handed 2 pretty sweet videos of the night. One from Maicol Chavez of Cru Joness who’s spending his days on the hunt for projects that satisfy his hunger for shooting & design. The second video comes from Ryan Fitzgerald (Director of 12th Planet ‘Reasons’ video) and his crew. I’m into the contrast between the slow mo and banger tune on this one. It’s interesting to me how different videographers can come up with completely different ways to portray a party and keep it interesting. Next Dubtroit is October 25th.

Let’s see, what else do we have for ya. Oh, are you interested in a new Los Angeles Dubstep Weekly? Brought to you by SMOG? Yes I bet you are! Look out for news on a new SMOG Sundays happening at Dim Mak Studios starting every week in November. Again, this crew has hosted almost every player in the genre, you know that you’re going to be treated to some special sets by bass music’s biggest monsters.

Last but certainly not least is the piece de resistance. 5 Years has been a long time of hard work on SMOG, and how else celebrate that than with a massive 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY! November 25th is the date so info is going to start trickling out soon about it but what we can tell you is that this event is a must attend. Not a maybe, not a we’ll see if I can afford it, no excuses; if you like Dubstep and bass music in general you wont want to miss this event. A venue you probably have never partied in, 3 rooms of bass chocked full of dj’s you know and love, a 12th Planet Documentary screening, and BBQ from the finest chef this crew has ever known, Daniel Jungle Riddim. This party is a cheap date so get on those early bird presales now, they are only $15. See you all on the dancefloor.
