Media Contender Podcast 12: Pools

PoolsNext up in the Media Contender Podcast series comes a duo that may be somewhat newly formed, but whose members have a long-standing and well-estabished history in the scene. Our own (thee) Mike B, along with Morse Code, have joined forces to create the most bodacious duo, Pools. They auspiciously released their first mixtape around Coachella last year and have since been in the studio bringing their sound to light with a few really solid releases lined up.

The Pools podcast is plain and simplly around good vibes…Nat and Mike have the feel-good, do-good, its all good m.o. on lock and this mix lends copious amounts of these things to the listener. They truly bring forth a great symbiotic relationship; the notable combination of both their efforts and knowledge comes across boldly and presents itself in well-orchestrated musical adventures. While the summer days and mojitos by the pool may be on their way out for most, Pools and their music will continue on promoting the eternal summer. Stay tuned in the coming months for more from these guys.

Check out the podcast and our exclusive interview with the duo below.

Can you tell us a little about how Pools came about? You guys have/are both producing separately under your own pseudonym’s, what made the combination of your efforts so important?

Mike: Summer 2010 was bonding time for Nat and I. We spent a lot of time hanging out at pools, eating delicious food and DJing together. Nat played me a bunch of beats he had made on a Roland 404, sampling some really rare records. We had the idea to bring them to my studio and add some drums and effects and fuck with ‘em a lil bit.
Nat: I had been making beats on samplers and drum machines for years so I had all this grooved out sampley stuff, and with Mike’s software recording expertise the proper sequencing and evolution of the beats into songs was practically effortless. It sounded good to us so we kept going.

Describe the Pools sound/mantra in 140 characters or less.

Nat: Blissed out sunny groovy vibes, eating well, living well, and questing.
Mike: Funky, deep, dubby, loopy beats for the times when shit is just all good.

What’s up next in the Pools universe?

Mike: We have two 12”s dropping on the Spills label, POOLS EP1 and POOLS EP2. They are gonna be vinyl at first. We have a track on the Swimming With Sharks EP that just dropped on ScionA/V. In the coming months we’re just gonna keep making music and compiling stuff for the sequel to our Paradise mixtape.

Type of person you wish never showed up to the party:

Nat: too-cool-for-school fools
Mike: people who don’t respect the social contract.

Mike, you’ve recently won “LA’s Best Club DJ” by LA Mag. Have you done anything to celebrate?

Mike: Not really. I got a lot of congrats from my friends and my family was stoked because it made them feel like I’m actually doing something in the world. But I didn’t have a party or anything like that. I actually didn’t even make it to the Award ceremony. Incidentally, I was DJing that night.

If anyone could remix a Pools original, who would you have it be?

Nat: Eddie C or Mark E.
Mike: That’s a tough question. I’m gonna stick with people who are still alive for possibilities sake and I’m also not gonna say Daft Punk, even though that’s my real answer. Let’s say Tom Moulton, it’d be pretty ill have to have a remix from the inventor of the remix! Or Basement Jaxx, they are next level in every way.

Which artist(s) have been the most influential to you both?

Mike: Just off the top… Rick Rubin, Marley Marl, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Dr Dre, Jason Blakemore, Biggie, Stretch Armstrong, The Wu-Tang Clan, Armand Van Helden, Herbie Hancock, Daft Punk, Jon Spencer, Basement Jaxx, DJ Sneak, Devo, The Who, Norman Cook, Mobb Deep, Frank Zappa, Busta Rhymes, Sonic Youth, LL Cool J, Michael Jackson, Prince, Glenn Danzig, Funkmaster Flex, Led Zeppelin and DJ AM.
Nat: Sheeit, Mike named a ton already…

You ask a girl if you can buy her a drink… what do you hope she’ll say?

Nat: “Sure, let’s do a shot of Fernet.”
Mike: “Thanks, but that dude over there has been buying me drinks all night, so I’m already drunk, but you seem way radder. Know any hot tubs nearby we could get in?”

Favorite non-electronic songs/albums at the moment?

Nat: Tame Impala
Mike: and Juicy J.

Finally…. what are you guys dressing up as for Halloween?

Nat: I have no idea, I was Hunter S. Thompson last year, easy to do in multiple cities and instantly recognizable and conducive to a good time. I wanna do something that basically always fits that criteria.
Mike: Every year I entertain the idea of dressing up as Otho from Beetlejuice.
