Now, I hate to get all chauvinist on you, but Star Eyes is known as being “one of the United States’ first female D&B DJs” so I guess I need to mention that. What, are you not impressed by that fact? Well, neither am I and I’ll tell you why. Being one of the hardest working DJs to cross genres through her 15+ year career behind the decks, California-born Star Eyes transcends the “look at that girl go!” game and has made a huge impact everywhere she has trotted with a single factor that makes us all androgynous- raw underground music. Now hailing from Brookyln, she is part of the notorious Trouble & Bass crew who are responsible for slaughtering dancefloors across the globe with their unique “mix of goth and rave influences whipped into a style she calls ‘haunted house.’” With only a few days to go until WMC, we had a chance to catch up with the hardy-partier and find out what’s in store.

MC: What’s up in the world of Star Eyes?

Star Eyes: I’m trying really really hard to stay home and not party so much so I can get tracks finished. By the time you read this, my UK funky/tropical remix of Hanuman’s “Bola” should be out on Murderbot’s Sleazetone label. Also working on a Bmore-ish relick of “Disappear” (my Trouble & Bass track from June 2009), making tracks with Pharaoh (formerly of Todosantos) and The Captain, and doing a few remixes. I also just put out a new goth & industrial DJ mix collabo with artist Dust La Rock (Fool’s Gold) for Mishka Clothing. It’s called Ov Cvrse and it debuts at SXSW with a party, a CD, and a limited edition t-shirt Dust designed. Then of course there’s the usual run of DJ gigs, mixes, and Trouble & Bass stuff—we’ve got a really busy year ahead with our new podcast, tons more parties and releases, and of course, watching the sun rise around the world.

MC: What’s next for you?

Star Eyes: Making more scary synth sounds, writing more lyrics about raving and dying, traveling around playing heavy bass jams and rattling eyeballs, lighting candles, drinking coffee, and perfecting my vegan pot pies. And probably a European tour in September and a remix for Lauren Flax’s C.R.E.E.P. project, but don’t quote me on that.

Jubilee and Star Eyes Midwest Tour Video 11/09

MC: Anything else that you want to share?

Star Eyes: Me and my roommates Dre Skull and Jubilee have a blog called Bad Manor (www.itsbadmanor.com/blog) that we post on when we are not too out of it. Not MP3s, more like funny gifs, recipes, vids, and Top 10s from the many strange and wonderful DJs that have stayed at our house. Also subscribe to the T&B podcast at www.troubleandbass.com.

Star Eyes: Happy Haus (Rubys Remix)

This is an unreleased remix from my 2009 “Disappear” EP on Trouble & Bass. A drummy early morning techno trip from the elusive Copenhagen duo known as Rubys.

Star Eyes: Ruffage Mix Part 1

Here is one side of my first official mixtape, a 90-minute old-school drum & bass jam called “Ruffage.” I think it’s from 1997? If it sounds noisy, that’s because it was ripped to MP3 from cassette (remember those?). Just a little taste of where I got my start, deep in the jungle!

Wow, 11 years of blood, sweat, and tears make up one of North America’s most beloved jungle club nights, Respect. Now residing at the famed Dragonfly, Club Respect has called a few of the Los Angeles hotspots its home over the years. Originating at Boardner’s in Hollywood in 1999, the Junglist Platoon have shown its dedication to preserving and progressing the sound and subculture that blew up around the mid-nineties. Respect is where myself and hundreds of people have called our home away from home every Thursday for years. It was the Platoon who inspired me to promote the music and lifestyle as hard as I have; the camaraderie between its members has been a shining example as I paved my path in this city.

I tip my hat to the hardest working Drum n Bass promoters in the great city of LA. On behalf of all of us at Media Contender, we salute Respect Drum n Bass. To celebrate this incredible milestone, the boys have reached out to original UK junglist, DJ RAP to commemorate this anniversary. I know its been a long time since she has played at Respect, so this will truly be a special day.

Introducing beasTmode, the alter ego of Mason of Gasm notoriety, presents Dubstep that meets on par with the heavy flavor this crew has brought to the world of Drum & Bass.

P5 Records was created by Philly newcomer Down Jones whos name you will defintely be hearing a lot more of. The first run of P5 releases debut on 12” and digital download from the likes of heavy hitters End Boss, Beastmode, Strange, and Down Jones himself. Dubs are out in the field already being caned by such notable artists as 6blocc, Joker, Noah D., Starkey and 12th Planet to name a few. Keep an eye out for Down Jones’ album debut ‘Dumb It Down’ on Foul Play Dubstep 12” avail through L.O.A.D. media, feat. 6blocc, Mad Cobra, Armanni Reign, Hulk and more!

The mix features work from some of our favorite artists like 12th Planet, Down Jones, B. Rich, Datsik, Joker and Kromestar to name a few. It also includes a tune that Danny and I pull a rewind on every time we hear it; White Christmas, produced by LA’s Origin with vocals by well known Philly MC Armanni Reign.

<img src="http://clubmuse.fm/images/flyers/20100129/web/muse20100219_front-final_web.jpg" alt="Muse Logo" "class="img_post">Muse is described as a vibe, something that inspires and uplifts people. For us, we see it as an opportunity to make an impact on people’s lives by curating an experience that is undeniable, one that leaves people smiling and thinking introspectively. Jeff Tovar aka Phear created Muse almost a decade ago, it ran for 6 years and was regarded as one of the premiere electronic music parties in Los Angeles, presenting the complexity and diversity of Drum n Bass music in a context which many people found a lot easier to digest. D&B has heavily progressed since the early amen mash up days of the 90’s and Muse has been a big part of that development in this city.

The return of Muse is this Friday, we have anticipated this night for a long time. This round we are presenting it in a slightly different format and what better way to re-launch than with John Tejada, a highly respected artist who has produced and played music from D&B to Tech House. We’ve also introduced you to Kuru, a new project from long time DJ/producer, Origin, and Muse creator, Phear. They have a new perspective on dance music; a more techno-influenced sound combining their love for future music in an entirely new way. I can describe Kuru and the new Muse in the same fashion- Techno that plays with D&B and Dubstep in a way that once heard, feels like a natural progression. You just have to hear it for yourself.

If you have been reading our features for a while, you know we always find a way to give you something that you just won’t find anywhere else on the web, today being no exception. We are proud to present to you the Return of Muse this Friday night in Thai Town, and in the spirit of giving, we offer you a Kuru original, this tune exemplifies exactly what I have described to you today, a sort of half step Minimal D&B/Techno bit that blurs the genre lines even further.

People are ready, and these two seasoned dj/producers and their deep crates of vinyl display their love for old school UK jungle and hardcore and take it back to a time when amen breaks, techno stabs, and fat basslines ruled the dancefloor.

” Lighta! Vol. 1 is the product of several days of us digging into our old vinyl crates and researching lost gems of the 92-96 era. You’ll hear the sounds of Ragga, Jump Up, Hip-Hop Jungle as well as some deeper Drum & Bass and rare Hardcore cuts. All mixed seamlessly together and smothered in bells and whistles or in this case, gunshots and lazers. ” – Camo UFO’s

In its heyday, the California West Coast was a mecca for Drum & Bass with San Francisco leading the way. Groups of talented artists such as the Phunckateck crew and Sister SF were pushing envelopes and forging sounds that helped put the US on the map in the global culture. While living in San Diego at that time, I caught wind of a Bay Area DJ acting as label manager for Skunkrock Productions by the name of Alley Cat who would be performing at the city’s most influential club, The Dragon Lounge. We had been in contact before the gig and finally met that night after she dropped one of the better sets I’ve heard at that location. Years went by, new paths were followed and she somehow ended up across the large pond doing even bigger and better things. Seeing all that she’s presenting to the table these days, I figured it was time to introduce you to this multi-faceted magnate and purveyor of deep music, Alley Cat.

Phear – We’ve known each other for years, dating back to when you used to live in San Francisco. I think the first time we physically met was at The Dragon Lounge down in San Diego when it was at the Baja Brewing Company, which was one of the best D&B clubs on the West Coast at the time. You seemed to be pretty active in the D&B community then, but now have your hands in even more projects living in the UK. Talk to me a little bit about the move from the States and your life now.

Alley Cat – Yes for a long time. The Dragon Lounge was a cool gig. Sage and myself were both residents there. (We are still friends BTW, I just talked to her today!)

The first one we played was early 1998 sometime. I think that was in the basement of some restaurant! Then it moved to the Brewery which was cool. That must be where we met? (Yep!)

Skipping ahead… I moved to London in 1999. It was a bold move but I’m still here! I really had little expectations.

At the time I DJed and helped manage a label called Skunkrock, working on tunes with some of the guys. After the label died down about 6 years ago I continued DJing, did various radio shows and started to get more into production over the last few years. I did some help for other labels a bit as well. Now I’m working on my new project Kokeshi, and am also a director at ESP Agency. I’m also involved in Feline which is a group of DJs and MCs (myself, Flight, Storm, Miss Pink, MC Chickaboo and Deeizm MC) who do events and gigs under that branding.

Your production has really impressed me these days, especially your latest releases on both OffShore and your own Kokeshi imprint. I’m noticing a heavy influence from the days of classic jungle and tech step… not just in your music, but in the overall scene. What has spawned this on your end and what do you think has motivated producers to dive back into that realm? Also, what do you think about the minimal style of D&B making huge waves at the moment?

Thank you :D I’m really pleased with the Offshore Recordings release (Sweet Spot) which was a split single with Vaccine. I really rate her as a producer and as a person so it’s awesome to share a record with her. And I’ve always really respected Offshore’s sound. I think the first release on Kokeshi is a tad more techy sounding than the Offshore, but both feature a lot of synths which is my favourite element to work with in a song.

I think the tech step stuff is sort of coinciding with the minimal sounds. Guys like Ulterior Motive are doing this sound that echoes of old Virus but still feels new, fresh and futuristic. So are Icicle, Sabre, S.P.Y and Nymfo. Also watch out for FD & Keza- they’re killing it! There was a bit of a gap that these guys filled. It’s just nice to hear some rolled out tunes and less anthem bashing. I also like what Lynx does because his stuff fits in with everything. I really love the ‘minimal’ movement, it’s what I prefer because of all the synths and pads and people are finally open to a bit of deepness which I was waiting to happen for years! The influences of the Autonomic guys mirror a lot of my own influences.

Give me a little history on the ESP Agency you work with. A few artists on your roster appear to have the multi-genre thing going which is really exciting. How important do you think that is to the future of electronic dance music?

ESP is almost 15 years old. Mark, who I used to do the old label with, always had ESP going. I started working at the agency in 2004 when he wanted to expand, yet we are still a small company. We’re doing mainly DnB and Dubstep bookings at the moment. But it’s exciting because music seems to be crossing over into other genres like you said, which is quite cool. Makes it more interesting. I think it’s very important that artists and promoters are trying to do multi-genre things. Drum’n'bass has had a bit of a bad rap over the years. People that aren’t totally immersed in it might think it’s all “aggro and shirtless dudes running around the dance” and that’s just not the case. If it’s introduced to crowds in a different way it’s only going to benefit our scene. I love that dBridge and Instra:mental are getting booked at Dubstep nights like FWD and DMZ, as well as multi-genre and more techno-y parties. But they still rock the dnb crowd at the same time. We work with acts including dBridge, Calibre, Instra:mental, Marcus Intalex, Lynx, Klute, Youngsta, Kryptic Minds, Black Sun Empire, and Consequence (who will be touring Europe in February 2010) to name a few!

Your Kokeshi label is seeing its second release by a guy named Lung doing Dubstep which is available today. The selection of music you are presenting is definitely staying true to the “Go Deep” slogan. What are your plans for future releases and the overall goal of the label?

There has to be something emotive in the music or I won’t be interested. The Lung tunes just sounded so different to me and really special. The next release is dubstep again, from Kiat and myself. I will probably be doing another Lung single and I’m also releasing an LP by a guy called Irrelevant which is about 135 to 140 bpm. I play a lot of his tunes on my ((Pod)) Kasts. I’ve also done a dubstep tune with MC DRS called Runnin’ Away which might come out on his LP on Soul:r. If not, it will probably end up on Kokeshi.

There’s a couple other guys I’m watching also but I’m keeping it under wraps for now ; ) –But its also more in the 140 bpm region. It’s not really a conscious choice to do more dubstep right now, they just happen to be making tracks that really grab me. The stuff I sign would also be played in a DJ set. It’s amazing the kind of music that gets sent to me, that people know both me and the label well enough to know what sounds I’m going to be into. It’s brilliant. I think doing the ((Pod)) Kasts helps.

The overall goal of the label is just to do what grabs me at the time musically. I’m more interested in people that are relatively unknown. I like that. I hope I’m getting to the stage this year where people will see the logo or the name and just think they’ll hear some good electronic music regardless of what tempo it is or who made it.

You’re coming to LA early next year! I can’t wait to meet up with you and have a few drinks over some loud, bass-heavy music. What all will you be doing while in town? Any gigs lined up?

Oh yes, drinks are a must! I’m playing at Respect on 14th January. I haven’t played there in a few years so I’m really looking forward to coming back! I’m not planning on doing any other gigs while I’m there (as of now) so I hope people can come out to Respect. I’ll be linking up with some family and friends as well and indulging in a bit of retail therapy, and eating loads of Mexican Food. Can’t wait!

Back once again with a feature on one of the UK’s hottest new artists – Randomer. I first met Rohan earlier this year whilst regularly seeing his face on the road and at clubs across England, since then he has gone from strength to strength hitting up bigger clubs and traveling further afield to spread his unique sound. With no genre limitations, he rides the lines with finesse and ease. Here is a little insight into the man behind the music..

Whats up Rohan, this is the first time we have featured you on Media Contender so tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a 23 year old londoner making bass driven electronic music. I started writing music when I first picked up a guitar aged 12 and got into writing electronic stuff later on. Got properly serious about it all when I was at university.. that’s about it really, my first release was 2 years ago and I’m making music at various tempos, mostly 170 & 140.

So over 10 years of music so far, quite a while! Many people will have started to hear about your music in the last 12 months though thanks to releases on Hospital and Medschool. How did that connection come about?

I had given up on making ‘drum’n'bass’ or music at 170bpm 2.5 years ago really. I was really uninspired by what was happening at the time so I started writing at 140 and then had my first two releases at 140. My sound developed quite a bit from this and as a joke I just wrote this thing at 170 called Sacrifice, a proper tribal thing. I then sent it to a few people on aim “just incase” and Chris BMT got back to me saying he really liked it. After that Tony (London Elektricity) got in contact and said he liked what I was doing so I started making more stuff at 170 again, I bashed out a good few tunes and then Tony decided to sign one I did with REDS called ‘Autonomy’ for the Medschool new blood EP. Since then I have been writing music at both tempos and getting the encouragement from hospital early on really helped.

It seems like no matter what tempo you work in you have developed a unique sound of your own which is quite different to a lot of the other stuff out there right now in both 170 and 140. What would you say are your main influences for this?

I don’t specifically TRY to do things different.. I do try not to sound the same though, if that makes sense. I’m just really open minded about music – I take what I like from a genre of music and make it my own, part of what has helped me do this is writing music in so many different styles when I was younger.

I agree you must be one of the most open minded producers out there as well. Lots of people will hate on a genre or rule things out but there isn’t often a week that goes by where I don’t bump into you at something like a Nosaj Thing show, Drum & Bass or a Dubstep night. It’s now that so many genres are crossing and electronic music is sort of hitting a new level – how do you think the perception of electronic music has changed?

It’s a massive part of popular culture now, it’s more of a cultural thing I think as back in the 60s 70s even the 90s there was this idea of subcultures the punks, the hippies, the ravers, metallers, goths, new romantics…etc. But in the new century, with the internet, mass media, globalization etc, people are more inclined to pick & mix.

Now in this post we are featuring a mix you did for Fat Mag. Tell us a little bit about what people can expect to hear in a typical Randomer set, what your preferred DJ platform is and why?

In a typical Randomer set you are likely to hear a really broad range of artists and tempos but they are tied together with sonic similarities. You could find a tribal house thing at 128 that has the same vibe as something at 170 or even a Timbaland beat at 100! I use ableton live for DJing which allows me to switch up tempo easier. To name a few names at the moment I’m really feeling Lil Silva, Untold, Dan Harbarnam, Joe, Pangaea and also like to bring a few classics out. You can’t play a 100% fresh mix to an audience in my opinion, they need some really familiar things for their ears to catch on to, I also use ableton to mashup a few well-known acapellas over my sets, which helps this.

Hell yeah, I think you have definitely managed to create a very unique set from that mentality. So keeping on the dj tip, where has been your favorite place to play so far whilst on the road and what is the place you would most like to play in the future?

I think my favorite place so far was in Lithuania. It was a club set up in a car park complex, still with some cars left inside with their alarms going off to the sub-bass. It reflected for me how much passion people can put into putting events on no matter what happens. Every crowd I play too has its own merits though, it can be so much fun to win over a crowd and fill out early on at one of the Hospitality nights too. Providing people are interested in putting me on, I want to play everywhere and anywhere. It would be great to go to the US too as dubstep seems to be really kicking off there right now, and there is this great connection between LA and London through the Low End Theory heads.

Now I should mention Scapegoat, your first solo release on Medschool if I’m right? It really seems to have gone down an absolute storm, what can people expect next from you release wise?

It’s my second solo release on Medschool, the first was blind/jobless last year.. but scapegoat was definitely the first of a kind as the first track that Medschool put out at 140. Release wise I’m working towards an album with medschool, I’ve got loads of tracks that I’e been testing out on the road that I’ve built over the last year. It’s now a case of working which ones work the best together! I’ve also been doing some remix work.. I’m doing a remix for Placebo and also a remix of liquid’s sweet harmony to go with Danny Byrd’s on Hospital.

So it was, I even have that first release haha. So here are some quick hitters before we have to roll out. Fave artist? Fave track and fave food right now?

So hungry right now, lol!

I’m actually eating a roast dinner whilst interviewing you, how english we are!

Haha, my fave track is all along the Watchtower by Hendrix. Could never say a fav artist completely, but I’ve been getting really into Hudson Mohawke recently. My favorite track right now is probably Dj Eastwood ‘u ain’t ready’ Untold remix and favorite food probably japanese or tex-mex!

Yeah hud mo is a badman, hes gonna take over the planet! So any last words or shouts before we wrap this up? Where can people find out more about you?

Yes Yes, shout out to Kevin Pangaea & Joe Dubstep my new flatmates, big up Jack Untold for inventing the hype elixir – DJs pon tour drink of choice oh and finally big up Ash medschool for all the work he puts in. Oh yeah annndd twitter.com/rohanrandomer, facebook.com/rohanrandomer – regularly spouting randomness of all sorts!

Well it’s been nice to catch up and get a short insight into your music and mind. We will definitely have to do a part two in the future – thanks for your time Rohan!

If you’re after some more ear candy after reading that, Randomer has supplied us with an unreleased track below called Rough Sex. It is with great anticipation and pleasure that I introduce you to Kuru, a new project consisting of Origin and Phear, two of the City of Angels’ best kept secrets. These two are no new-jacks, rather electronic music veterans in a city rich in dance music history. They have been making an impact on the Los Angeles underground for over 10 years, with so many contributions via club nights, records, websites, flyers— I couldn’t even begin to list them all here. So much coming up from them including their debut performance TONIGHT at Los Angeles’ longest running drum n bass club, Respect. Taking matters into their own hands by helping pave the way for something new, heavily influenced by techno and drum n bass, welcome to the sound of Kuru.

Download this exclusive mix and grab the remix they did for San Diego’s Ghettron entitled Anthem. This track is heavy with the bass and sick with the dark and dirty dancefloor vibes.

We walked into a packed venue where Michiganite Sinistarr was providing the smoother, deeper side of Drum & Bass mixed with some more aggressive and classic material. Gridlok later took over to close out the night, proving why he is one of the state’s most prolific producers. I hate to sound cliché, but, you can usually tell when the DJ gets lost in his own world of music, and that’s where he seemed to be. So far gone, in fact, his set felt to be more contagious group therapy than a performance.

Feeling inspired by what was going on around me, I decided to challenge myself a bit and shoot with the 50mm f/1.4D lens without a flash. Yes, even us event photographers need to throw our safeguards out the window and see what we can make of it once in a while. I’ll be honest, most of what came out was a blurry, uber-grainy mess. But there are always those few…

Almost 3 years ago, Gridlok, one of the genre’s most prolific producers moved to LA. In fact, he now lives next door to me and is a contributing factor as to why I have been proclaiming Downtown LA as a hub for the future of electronic music. With all the people I know now living in or moving into Downtown, I cant help but get excited for what is right around the corner and something I have been plotting and planning for the last 6 years I have lived in the historic core of Los Angeles. Anyways, I not only admire this veteran producer/dj and label boss, but I consider him a close friend and someone I have been able to talk to in great depth about the state of the music and scene, which is rare for me. Someone who matches my passion and frustration and reminds me why I chose this life over a decade ago. Its guys like him that define the word artist, someone who does not compromise themselves in the creative process.

It’s been nearly four years since Gridlok’s debut album on his own label, Project 51 suitably named “Break the System” solidified his dynamic sound into the vanguards of Drum and Bass. Considered one of the best producers in the genre, Gridlok’s music disturbs and excites dance floors across the globe.
Since his start in 1999, he has released tracks with some of the most respected labels in Drum and Bass, including RAM, Shogun Audio, C.I.A., Violence Recordings, and Renegade Hardware. His studio prowess has found him doing remix work for some of the brightest stars in electronic music such as Sasha, Josh Wink, Ed Rush & Optical, Mampi Swift, and Pop Will Eat Itself. An artist not only limited to consistently releasing chart-topping dance singles, Gridlok’s other noteworthy accomplishments include his work with Konami for their massive “Dance Dance Revolution” franchise, and his Grammy-nominated collaboration with AK1200 “Autopsy”, which was up for Best Electronic Album in 2008. Throughout all of this, Gridlok has maintained a relentless touring schedule taking him everywhere from Russia to Australia, delivering a vibe that is undeniable to all those that dare to strap in for the ride. Now it is time for the latest chapter in this artist’s journey.
