Tonight SMOG kicks off its first Dubtroit of the year, with San Franciscan DJG will be bringing his deep and moving style of bass to the night, along with Steady, Pablo Hassan, Tealong, and Pavarotti showing support as well. The Constellation room is more than ready for its monthly dose of dubstep and we are excited to be kicking off the year with a great selection of talent.

First up, tonight we have a big Fool’s Gold takeover with Danny Brown, Main Attrakionz, Party Supplies, and Thee Mike B. They’ve also just announced a very special guest, another lovely addition to the Fool’s Gold family and a resident of the city of angels, none other than Kid Sister herself, with her friend Sinden on the decks behind her. Fool’s Gold has a unique and eclectic collection of artists, definitely due to be a great night with a varied selection of talent to sing, rap, and dance along to.

Wednesday night Check Yo Ponytail is bringing you one of the six LA shows that Skrillex is playing this week…. However, CYP is making extra special and throwing a back to back to back set with Skrillex, 12th Planet, and Caspa. Three legends in the bass scene coming together to share the stage, definitely a mark in musical history and something Los Angeles won’t soon forget. To top it all off, Diplo will also be there to play, along with our very own Kuru. I think the tickets selling out in less than an hour speaks pretty clearly as to how epic it’s about to go down!

Special guest Benga (commonly billed with Skream and one third of Magnetic Man) is currently preparing for his upcoming UK tour with Youngman. He has a new radio show on UK’s BBC Radio 1 alongside Skream and currently a new album in the works so he is sure to have a few tricks up his sleeve.

English singer-songwriter Katy B will be making her official debut in Southern California. Known for her chart-topping album in the UK, On A Mission, and commonly performing with Magnetic Man (featured on their track “Perfect Stranger”) she will most definitely bring a special touch of class to this bass heavy event with her live performance.

Dubstep Turntablist and DMC world champion DJ Craze has been busy touring with rap sensation Yelawolf. Taking a break from his busy touring schedule and running his own label, Slow Roast Records, he will be joining the stage to deliver his sought after selection, respected technique and world class talent.

GetDarker founder and owner Darkside will also be making a special appearance. Often labeled a veteran of dubstep, he is thrilled to showcase the diverse range of sounds he is exposed to being GetDarker’s label boss.

As if this main room lineup isn’t enough to make a massive event, we’ve added a second room, hosted by us here at Media Contender featuring Thee Mike B, Kuru and friends. You better believe that our boys will be bringing some serious backup and we can’t wait to see what comes of it.

Albuquerque’s EshOne will be making his SMOG debut as well this week. Representing Dataset and Elk Beats, EshOne will be bringing some ‘Tijuana Bass’ to Dim Mak Studios. A fusion of dubstep bass at 140 bpm with horns and riffs from all over Latin America, it’s a sound EshOne refers to as the ‘panty dropper.’ We can only hope it gets that live on Sunday so I have my fingers crossed. Expect something different from this dude.

Rounding out this night is long time Los Angeles favorite DJ Machete as well as Long Beach representative Selecta Ghetto. It’s going to be a great night and a perfect welcome back to our Sunday night home. As usual it’s FREE w/ RSVP, with drink specials as well. See you on the dancefloor!

Club Cheval, consisting of four young producers (Canblaster, Panteros666, Myd, and Sam Tiba) from France, is a unique identity, so to speak, an anti-groove to the who’s who and what’s what of music today. They’ve combined both everything and nothing at the same time, venturing into every microcosm of music to develop something that seems familiar but has still never been done before. Melodies, basslines, synths, and samples from hip hop to uk funky to techno are cleverly developed with new insight. Canblaster’s various originals and remixes are a testament to that: using samples from unexpected places like a horse or phone feedback along with plenty of eccentric flips, noises, and synths to create a sound all his own. The rest of his crew have all created tunes backed by producers and DJs in every zone. By not succumbing to the trends and pretentiousness of any musical scene, they’ve actually gained more downright respect from their peers than most.

Club Cheval is a really exciting and bright young team of musicians. Los Angeles, get thrilled on their first appearance in our lovely city, get (more) familiar with the Club Cheval sounds, and leave with a smile on your face, new thoughts in your head, and happy feet. Below, to both heighten the anticipation and educate anyone unfamiliar with any of Club Cheval’s stuff, we’ve included 3 mixes for you to check out. We hope you enjoy this crew as much as we do and we look forward to seeing ya on the dancefloor!

Starting out at the Vanguard in 2005, Funktion Wednesdays was an institution for D&B in Los Angeles, hosting the who’s who of the genre as well as a huge cast of local talent. Amongst the main room massive this event hosted, Funktion also played host to a number of rotating side room promoters including the beginnings of the internationally recognized SMOG collective. After a few years at Vanguard, the event made a move to Cinespace and then a few other one-off venues until they closed up shop at the end of 2007, leaving a void in the city’s weekly fix of bass music.

Now, in 2012, Funktion is back and bigger than ever. Opening up the format to include the ever popular Dubstep, Funktion Wednesdays is 18+ and set to present a week-in-week-out onslaught of the best in bass heavy dance music. This event will not be limited to just Los Angeles so keep your ear to the ground for their installments elsewhere such as Las Vegas on Thursdays.

The relaunch event of the brand is being headlined by a man that needs to introduction. Rusko is a worldwide music icon who has sold out venue after venue for the better part of the last 2 or 3 years. He’s been in the lab for quite some time putting the finishing touches on his new album so be prepared to hear a boatload of exclusives. In the meantime you can head over to his site for a special pack he has given away for the holiday season.
