Check Yo Ponytail 2 is back to its regularly scheduled Tuesday night for the evening, bringing in a special selection of artists to groove to. Headlining the evening is Brooklyn-based duo, Light Asylum. With their electro-influenced gothic melodies and haunting vocals from the lovely Shannon Funchess, it should be a riviting live performance from the two. Added to the lineup as well are Chelsea Wolfe, who brings a dark and eerie take on folk music, Tearist a dicotic, DIY-electronic duo, Violet Tremors, two ladies with a unique all-encompassing aesthetic, and Slow Motion DJs. A night chock-full of interesting duos and a new generation of music blending bands and electronic production. Each of these artists have electrical presences on stage making this an evening not recommended to be missed.

As always with CYP2, an exclusive mixtape has been provided, this time from Light Asylum. Nice and dark.

Tonight at Dance Right, Media Contender once again is taking over downtown’s La Cita bar to keep the energy at peak-levels after Artwalk. Headlining the evening is SMOG’s own not-so-secret weapon, Flinch. If you’ve been following him at all on twitter, you know he’s been hustling in his studio as well as back at the compound with 12th Planet, so be ready for a barrage of unreleased, and potentially unheard new tracks sprinkled over the course of his fired up set.

To add to the evening, The Juggernaut will also be making an appearance in celebration of the release of his new EP “The Hustle” on the SMOG imprint. Finally, one half of CAMO UFOs and arguably the man with the best beard in Los Angeles, Nate Day will be there to open up the evening. If tonight is anything like last time we took over La Cita, you’re not going to want to miss it. The best part? It’s FREE with RSVP until 11, and only $5 after. Score.

Tara LaPlante, Futra’s HBIC, has been able to create a unique collective with the label, able to blend art in its many forms and derivatives in a way that allows you to both admire each way individually and together as a collective.

★ ★ ★ ★ CLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS ★ ★ ★ ★

Up next in the Futra world is the LA edition of the Surefire Sound Spring Tour, in celebration of the release of both Addison Groove and Doc Daneeka‘s album releases earlier this year. With both albums released on Modeselektor’s 50Weapons label, the two are able to bond together in a tour ready to fire up clubs all over. Addison Groove, a veritable heavyweight in the UK bass scene, has been an important addition to the musical repertoire with his innate ability to cater to the both the dubstep world and the house and techno scenes. Doc Daneeka, champion of the small but well-appreciated label Ten Thousand Yen, is also making a very greatly-anticipated appearance, and with deep and effective bass lines and an ability to blend styles into something that leaves you somewhat unsure of the exact sound that leaves you reeling after the show, his set is not one you’re going to want to miss. Of course, our nearest and dearest in the underground music scene, Kuru, will be there in support of the night.

Kuru has provided the next round of Futra’s brilliant podcasts, and it’s ready just in time to hype the upcoming festivities on Thursday. Chock full of immense tracks that envelop every sense of the deep and meaningful side of the house and techno universe, it’s a mix that can be appreciated for a long time to come. You can download it below and subscribe to the series via iTunes here.

This Thursday Check Yo Ponytail has an extremely special lineup coming through the Echoplex, one so great you’d be making a huge mistake to miss it. As many attendees of Check Yo’s shows know, it’s always been a great platform for artists from every corner of the world, in every genre, to play, especially the ones who don’t come around very often. Unified by forward-thinking and a passion for music, bands, rappers, DJs, and everyone in-between has graced the stage. So, to kick off May, a selection of electronic talent from around the globe is ready to show Los Angeles what they’re made of.

★ ★ ★ ★ CLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS ★ ★ ★ ★

Tiga, head of Turbo Recordings and generally one of the most awesome musical personalities of all time, is heading the night, along with Crosstown Rebels’ brilliant Damian Lazarus, and Australia’s champion Light Year. Of course, let’s not forget CYP2′s resident badman Franki Chan will be there to kick off the night as well. Each of these four men have been holding their own in the music game, with names that no DJ nor fan will soon forget. Forging their way past trends, cliches, and pigeonholes, they’ve all been creating music that continually raises the bar and pushes the scene forward.

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am for this show. Everyone on the bill is an amazing performer with a keen ear for great music and the skills to match. In anticipation for the evening’s festivities, Light Year has provided an excellent hour-long mix to hype everyone up. It’s a lively and tasteful travel through Light Year’s style, with tinges of the styles Damian Lazarus and Tiga have in the mix as well. Enjoy, and see you all Thursday.

PS- As an added bonus, if you haven’t seen Tiga’s “Ciao Means Forever” interview series… you need to. Seriously.
Commandeering the stage at the legendary Hollywood House of Blues with a slew of each of their own artists, SMOG and Respect are champions at their game. Each DJ will definitely be bringing their big guns and their A-game to support their team, and to face the supreme talent seen on either side. The night is only a whopping five dollars with RSVP, which can be done in 5 seconds on the SMOG website. And in celebration of the beginning of pool party season, what better place to end your Saturday than down the street from The Standard?

To get you extra amped for the night, Scooba put up one of his recent sets at Respect for you all to enjoy.

Tonight Check Yo Ponytail 2 is back and this time we’re bringing the long-awaited show with Hype Williams, Gatekeeper, James Ferraro, Whitecar, and Slow Motion DJs to the humble grounds of the Echoplex. We’re very excited for the show and as a little appetizer for the night, Whitecar has provided a little mixtape in liu of tonight’s festivities. The Chicago-based duo slang together a 30 minute selection through the dark, goth-influenced techno wave realm, all too appropriate for the eve and definitely for the stage at Echoplex. Hope to see many of you out there tonight, and in case you missed it, the link to buy tickets is below.

As one of the early pioneers of drum and bass in the US, UFO! has consistently proven himself over the past two decades as one of the most groundbreaking and innovative producers of electronic dance music. Not limiting his musical creativity to a single genre of music, UFO! is constantly reinventing himself and pushing the boundaries of his own musical abilities. A native of San Francisco, UFO! recently decided to make the move to Los Angeles in order to take advantage of the unparalleled opportunities that the city has to offer. He is currently working on an upcoming EP while collaborating in the studio with frontrunners such as Flinch, Bro Safari, Mayhem and Kuru.
Having made a notable impact on the dubstep scene with their remixes along with their EP “Digital Drugs,” the duo (Freddie and Tom) have been cranking out tunes in the studio along with blasting out quite a few shows on the East coast, including their monthly run in Philly, aptly titled “Beer Rave.”

We got a nice little interview in with Freddie and Tom before they pick up their bags and shove them into the Sex Cult limo to head to sunny California for the start of their tour. You can check them out in LA this Friday at Control Fridays at Avalon, tickets of which are available here. They’ve also given us a free remix for download… cop it, play it, and we’ll see you all on Friday.

How are you guys? What have you been up to?

Hey hey! We’re doing splendidly. Enjoying some of the unusually nice spring weather by sitting in a dark, poorly ventilated studio. It’s been a bit of a mad dash between shows and finishing up new originals and remixes before we hit the west coast in April.

You’re a part of Designer Drugs’ label Sex Cult. How did that relationship come about?

We were brought together by our love of fine whiskey and rocking out to Asian pop music like drunken Japanese tweens. Seriously though, we worked with Michael and Theo for quite a while on various projects, and when we started PLS DNT STP they were really into the songs. They started asking us for remixes and it has just grown from there. It was really a no-brainer; we all get along and work together nicely and have similar tastes in music, design… and Japanese tweens.

You’ve also got a tour coming up with Sex Cult’s crew. Anything you’re most excited about? Got some funny tour anecdotes?

We’re EXTREMELY pumped for Avalon in LA next week with the whole team, including our pal Alvin Risk. Overall though, just pumped for the whole thing. Tons of anecdotes from the midwest tour but as of right now it’s probably best to leave them off the net. Although, we can confirm that laptops and mixers are not tequila proof, it really is possible to fit more than 30 people in a limo, and Freddie may or may not have lost 20 pounds on tour.

If you could have anyone remix a PLS DNT STP original, who would it be?

Hmm. How about 2? We would love Calvertron to remix one of our songs. His sound really kills it with the glitch+party feel. And DJ Funk. Just because.

Any pre/post set or studio rituals?

Well Four Loko used to be our go to pre studio ritual. Sadly they took it off the shelves… probably for the best. We were working in overdrive, but we def payed for it the next day. Lately we’ve switched the game up: thousands of cigarettes and an emergency IV from the Jack Lalanne juicer.

Being in the dubstep game is a pretty lucrative position to be in. Can you perhaps shed some light on some not so lucrative parts of the biz? The kind people don’t already know about…

Freddie: Interesting question. Right now, not just dubstep, but music in general there is a huge emphasis on how your music is presented ie image. Sometimes it’s awesome… it lets you put a style to your sound that you might have not been able to achieve so easily just a few years ago. On the same tip it kinda sucks having to actually dedicate so much time slapping together graphics and videos when you just want to write new songs. We started this project to make dope tracks, ya know? Word of mouth still means a lot, but you really have to step your game up to grab attention now a days. And if you don’t have the music to back it up, folks will give you a healthy 15 minutes and move on.

Thomas: I think its a shame that there will be fewer and fewer classic, cohesive albums that will sound as good or better 30 years from now. The days of artists spending a year to create a masterpiece of an album and waiting another year or 2 to release another are long gone. They would be forgotten in the flood of new artists and releases that came out in that lull.

How do you guys split the efforts between you for PLS DNT STP? Is one of you the studio guy and the other the DJ guy?

We both dj and prefer to play together. It’s just more fun. As far as the rest of the project, we write the music together quickly and rough sounding. Thomas does the wizard work when it comes to engineering and Freddie takes care of business and promo stuff. Freddie is a big picture type guy and Thomas is a nerdy detail guy. It’s a great balance.

Piece of studio or DJ equipment (or software tool) you wish existed?

It would be nice if there was more of a standard for DJ software interfaces, like if you didn’t need proprietary hardware to run tractor or serato etc. The whole “everyone needing different equipment at shows” can be a drag. Something like an easier way to interface 2 or more laptops would be nice. Trying to do tag team sets with multiple serato users is less than ideal even with the SL4.

Tell us about the track you’ve given to us.

We’re super jazzed to give you guys this song. It’s a remix we put together for Scottie B, the original was a pop/electro release they had for an artist by the name of Broms. It was def a departure from the Sex Cult stuff we were remixing at the time, gave us a chance to just turn out some bouncy party shit. The response it got from Designer Drugs’ Datamix 15 was huge, so we’re stoked to finally have it out as a track. Biggups Unruly Records for allowing us to remix this as well.

It’s been an unbelievable year in this “little” scene, and MMW this year is evident of that growth: hundreds of events with thousands of artists spanning every genre and sub-genre and yet-to-be-named genre, and a record sell-out of Ultra Music Festival. We’ve perused the depths of the event rosters over the course of the next week, and below you’ll find all of our picks along with artists not to miss and ticket/RSVP links.

So whether it’s your first or fifteenth trip over to Miami, we hope to see you all out on the dance floor enjoying the rally of a week we all have ahead of us. All of these parties are either free or you can purchase tickets by clicking on the ticket link or flyer below. And if you’re one of the many headed over to Ultra Music Festival, the mecca and central location for this week’s festivities, make sure not to miss our boy 12th Planet on Saturday for his second round over at UMF.
