If you had the good fortune of catching this tour in your home town then you would have witnessed the absolute insanity of its state of the art production, massive sound, crazy crowds and dope music from Skrillex, 12th Planet, Nadastrom, Two Fresh and the Foreign Beggars. The excitement was huge for this show and upon arrival at the Fillmore, thousands of anxious party-goers were in line and ready for the madness. As usual, the event was a huge hit, ending as Skrillex brought all the members of his tour family out on stage for a bow and one last thank you to their fans. It was a magical moment for these young musicians and the perfect way to sign off.

After the concert portion of the night was over, we jumped in the bus and headed for the afterparty at Miami’s Grand Central. Already packed to the tits when we arrived, the club exploded in excitement as the Mothership crew entered the building. 12th Planet and Skrillex took the stage for a rowdy back-to-back session that had the club going bonkers. Stage diving, glowsticks, screaming and a lot of booze… it was a fitting ending to the night.

The next day, we headed with the crew for a special afternoon event held at the Fountainbu Hotels Arkadia pool-side club. Beach balls, bikinis, bass and little umbrella drinks, the crowd at this was absolutely bananas. Hotel guests observed from their windows, a couple hundred fans gathered around the stage and floated in the pool listening to sets from the Overthrow’s Damaged Good, Mothership’s Nadastrom, 12th Planet and then Skrillex. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon and it was a winding down chance for all the crew to get together for one final hoorah.

As the crew started to go their separate ways you could tell that they had all been apart of something special. All artists are at the top of their game and as massive as this tour was, you can bet that they all have even bigger things on the horizon. To all the crew we met out there, to the artists and staff of the Mothership tour, the Overthrow, Rockstar Mansion, and everyone else who supported and took care of us, we thank you.

Orange County got an absolutely massive dose of party this weekend, with SMOG’s 5 Year at the Galaxy Theater on Friday, and INTO THE AM’s big event with Steve Aoki, 12th Planet, and Autoerotique at the Grove of Anaheim on Saturday. Both Aoki and 12th are icons in their own right, each standing for energetic and boisterous sets and connecting with their fans and audience. Aoki was armed with several absolute bombs in his set, including his new joint with none other than Tiesto himself, “Tornado” and another with Rivers Cuomo, “Earthquakey People”. Am I sensing that Aoki is spreading his sense of causing a ruckus to his track titles as well?

12th Planet is very much an enigma in the sense that few, if anyone, can understand how he can put on such a performance and exude so much energy one night and pick up and deliver again the following evening. I don’t know how any one at the SMOG event on Friday managed to get up and function the next day, let alone perform twice in the span of 24 hours! The art of performance is one that both Aoki and 12th excel at, which was extremely evident on Saturday night.

Altogether it was a fun excursion out to the OC on Saturday night, the turnout was great, and it was so nice to see everyone come out for yet another night of fun. One of our photographers, Oliver Scherillo, tagged along to snap some shots of the event, which you can see the full album for below.

The energy, excitement, and genuine love for dubstep and the growth of the culture within it was felt all around, easily making the night one that will remain in our hearts for a long time to come. Rarely do you ever see an event packing out before nine, but such was the case on Friday, with many people showing up early to get their hands on some of Riddim’s unfalteringly good BBQ, as well as to catch the grand premiere of 12th Planet’s documentary. We at Media Contender are no strangers to Riddim’s masterful skills on the grill, and having to tackle such a large audience seemed a somewhat daunting feat; yet many delicious meats were on deck for everybody to enjoy. The documentary, directed by the lovely Mollie Tarlow, was a production more than two years in the making. Through the progress of the documentary, we also saw a fascinating timeline of the dubstep movement as well. From early studio days and Skrillex’s glistening moments before he reached superstar status, to the huge presence of both John, SMOG, and dubstep itself in places like Miami Music Week and Electric Daisy Carnival, we got to see the ups and downs and in-betweens of one of our great friends and pioneers of the American dubstep movement, along with the many friendships he has made along the way.

★ ★ ★ SMOG 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY ★ ★ ★

★ ★ ★ SHOT BY CAESAR SEBASTIAN ★ ★ ★

The night churned on, with three areas of music creating an ambiance that the newly re-opened Galaxy Theater seemed to happily take in. All of the SMOG artists were in attendance, with many of them providing killer sets that showcased both their individual styles and the SMOG prowess. Rounding midnight, the main room was filled and the anticipation (pun intended) for Skream was high. As one of dubstep’s originators, Skream provided a relative showcase of the history of dubstep, from Midnight Request Line to his unreleased remix of the new Rusko track and everywhere in-between. The last half hour 12th Planet took the stage as well, and with that, the first ever back-to-back Skream x 12th Planet set was written in the history books. Many rushed the stage in the final moments of the show, with everyone cheering for an encore as the boys gave their thank you’s and everyone who had worked so hard for both the show and SMOG in general embraced each other with a reverie and unabashed pride in SMOG and the nights’ events.

When we get together and plan these types of shows, our imaginations run wild with idea’s on how to make them better. Everything about Smog 5 Year went perfectly to plan. We had a nice size crowd for the BBQ at 7pm, we had a great turnout for the 12th Planet documentary screening, by 10pm the venue was full. You always worry that someone performing one one stage might make it hard for someone else on another stage. At Smog 5 Year, every stage was going off all night!

We have done a few shows with Skream in cities like Miami and Chicago, but this was the first time he has actually played for us in LA so that meant a lot to us. We also knew that he would do it properly; he would do justice to everything we stood for. In the end, he blew our expectations with a performance he prepared especially for Smog. He even played the “Happy Birthday” song and dragged me on stage for it. Gotta love the guy for showing us so much love. – Drew Best , SMOG CEO

★ ★ ★ SMOG 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY ★ ★ ★

We are so incredibly proud of SMOG and feel honored to have been a part of their progression over the past five years. Dubstep has seen an incredible growth in America since 2006, and it is an unspoken fact that SMOG had plenty to do with making that happen. To Drew Best, Danny Johnson, John Dadzie, the entirety of SMOG’s repertoire of artists, everyone who’s shown support along the way, and especially to King Skream, we give thanks! Here’s to another five years!

Combine Franki’s forces with our main man Danny United and you’ve got quite the party-throwing ultra-combo. Having a year’s worth of shows and now a national tour for Check Yo Ponytail now under their belts, things seem to be in the swing of things just as much as ever. Two back-to-back packed out shows followed shortly (and by shortly, I literally mean just about 48 hours) by a successful tour run across the country are pretty solid evidence that IHEARTCOMIX and Media Contender are a force to be reckoned with.

The tour has only just finished wrapping up (with its last date at Fun Fun Fun Fest, where I do believe Ryan Gosling was partying with the CYP crew…) and that means we’ve finally gotten to delve into the footage from the two shows we had last month with Brooklyn-based band The Drums. Joined by IO Echo, Superhumanoids, NAR, and of course Franki Chan, The Drums brought us all two amazing shows which were beautifully captured in the video. I swear everyone looks better in black and white, and The Drums’ track “Money” is an ideal soundtrack to the charming footage.

Also available are the pictures from our friends Cesar Sebastian and Shadowscene, who were both also right on cue in capturing the spirit of the lighthearted and much enjoyed shows. Of course, don’t forget to stay tuned for all of the wrap-ups, photos, and what-not from the tour, and Check Yo Ponytail’s 1 Year Anniversary Party coming up on December 6th. Media Contender & IHEARTCOMIX has got some fun stuff in the works and we truly appreciate all of you who’ve made the year so special!

Halloween weekend is without a doubt one of the biggest holidays for music and festivals, likely only being topped by New Years. Perhaps it is an engrained trait that, really, we all just love to party in costume. Whatever the reason, there was no shortage of goings-on this weekend in our lovely home of Los Angeles (even after one of the larger festivals, Monster Massive, was cancelled), and for the sake of preservation we had several photogs out there to capture some action.

Although many started their weekends on Thursday, we delayed our festivities until Friday night, where we got our digs in at a festival extremely close to my heart, HARD Haunted Mansion. I’ve been to every HHM since its start four years ago, and proud to say so as Gary Richards (aka Destructo, the HMIC for all HARD events) continually brings refreshing lineups to his events that are always on point and always two steps ahead of the game. Being a massive fan of the sounds coming from the UK and Berlin at the moment, I was absolutely sold by lineup. Artists like Housemeister, Paul Chambers, and Switch are so vital to the scene at the moment, they’re true artists who have been creating a combination of forward-thinking and analog-based sounds for years now. Then you have dudes from the UK like L-Vis 1990, Pearson Sound, T.E.E.D.,and SBTRKT who are shaping the evolution of bass and house music as we know it. The two-day festival is simply an awesome platform for good music. We got some snapshots of both days of HARD courtesy of URB & Oliver Scherillo. You can check out their full article on the event here.

Highlights of the Friday night festivities at HARD were 2ManyDJ‘s clever blend of genres & amazing live visuals (they animate the album covers of each song they play… I took a video of their rendition of Jack Beats’ “All Night”, check it out below) as well as Switch’s saucy track selection that took everyone inside at the HARDER stage on a journey inside his elusive mind. I was a bit surprised at how few of the artists that night were dressed up, thankfully our boys Zeds Dead came in as the ringers for the night, dressed up as a rabbi and Jesus. DC and Hooks, the quintessential duo that continually combines two things most people wouldn’t think work together! Closing out Friday night outside was Rusko, who laid out plenty of new tunes and leaked energy from every tip of his lion-esque mowhawk. Inside was Tiga, whose impeccable and meticulously chosen techno-driven track selection drove me to dance more than I have danced in a long, long time (which is definitely saying something).

Saturday night our crew split, with simply too many events to miss out on. Clancy and I headed out to San Bernardino for Insomniac’s first ever Escape From Wonderland festival. With a lineup from Steve Angello to Marco Carola to Borgore, there was most definitely something for everybody at the festival, and with over five massive stages and an absolutely mind-boggling amount of production, the show easily sold out long before the evening began.

★ ★ ★ ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND ★ ★ ★

I walked in slightly before 7PM to a lively crowd absolutely losing it to Le Castle Vania on the second of the two main stages, where his crowd surfing & unreleased remix of Kaskade’s “Turn It Down” electrified the audience. Of course, the majority of our time was later spent at the bass & dubstep stage, where we got to catch our homie Armanni Reign MC for Wilkinson, the legendary Sub Focus putting down a stupendous drum & bass set, and another brilliant performance from Pendulum. Closing out the stage was Borgore, whose notoriously grimy and X-rated tunes left the entire hanger singing along and bowing in agreement. Konspiracy Th3ory was out and about to catch some of the risque behavior:

★ ★ ★ ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND ★ ★ ★

I scoped a bit of Steve Angello’s set at the main stage on my way out of the festival, staying there for a little longer than I had intended not only because of Angello’s impressive performance, but because of the sheer scope of production on his stage. Insomniac seriously blows every other festival in America completely out of the water on the production tip: the lights, the dancers, the effects, the visuals, everything involved make being in the audience more than just about the music, but about the whole experience. It’s truly larger than life and you can feel it through every inch of your body when you’re a part of it. The spectacularity was caught well by photographer Matthew Little below.

Some of us stayed over in the depths of DTLA, where HARD’s second night hit off with another appealing lineup of artists. Our boys from the Mothership Tour, Skrillex and 12th Planet, were finally back in town and both hit HARD for another performance. The highly entertaining Skream & Benga as well as Major Lazer were both around as well to bounce about and introduce LA to all sorts of weird tings. Soulwax, a group that every electronic music fan everywhere should see before they die, headlined the main stage, and from what I heard went off with a bang.

★ ★ ★ HARD HAUNTED MANSION ★ ★ ★

No matter where you chose to celebrate Halloween weekend, there was plenty of good music everywhere and we’re truly stoked that we live in such an awesome city where so many awesome things are happening.

The Check Yo’ Ponytail Tour kicked off last Thursday with their first show at The Mayan in LA, then moved up to San Francisco for a wild Friday night at Mezzanine SF. I happened to be in town for contract work at Fanhattan, so luckily I was able to make it out and experience the debauchery first hand. All the acts were great, each bringing a unique and eclectic vibe to the show. There were a couple highlights for me, though — having never seen The Death Set live, I have to say that they are a breath of yesteryear’s fun. High energy, youthful and exuberant, just how rock should be; and what a special treat it was to see Franki Chan play the drums with them! Following that ruckus was Big Freedia who, with her vivacious dancers, got things nasty with the beat of the Bounce. Everyone was going nuts! Girls were taking their shirts off and asses were EVERYWHERE.

If you’re lucky enough to have this tour come to your town, don’t hesitate to buy your tickets now and catch one of the most exciting nights around.

The main show happened at the Koolhaus on Saturday night and it couldn’t be more packed and alive; it really went off without a hitch. Skrillex’s futuristic stage looked incredible and everybody sounded amazing. Also, seeing 12th Planet jump off a stage to surf a massive crowd is always priceless. What’s next are pictures from round one of this crazy weekend.

The afterparty for The Mothership Tour was held at Wrongbar, and in a way it was even wilder than the main show. The crowd got so out of control that Skrillex and 12th Planet had stop their B2B set to ask the kids to please calm down, which never really happened but the show had to go on, so it did!

On Sunday night, Toronto was treated to an intimate show at The Hoxton. Some lucky fans got to enjoy from what was another unreal and exclusive party that put an end to an incredible weekend of bass brought to you by Skrillex and The Mothership Tour.

The end of September is always a special time for me because it happens to be my birthday. How other would I want to ring in a new year of life than pushing the limit and going on a whirlwind tour with the homies? The weekend was chocked full of mayhem, starting off with my first time in San Diego for the opening night of the Mothership Tour and ending up hungover at a ranch outside of LA for the Kastle video shoot. And, oh yeah, a 2-day festival in between. Frankly, I’m lucky to have survived and wanted to share this weekend on the road with Media Contender in photos.

Thursday, September 22nd, marked the launch of the Mothership Tour. I’d heard all about the new Skrillex cell and live show, from the moment we arrived, I knew we were in for it. Taking place in San Diego’s Petco Park, the anticipation was growing right in front of us. Thousands of kids were already in line to get in by the time we got there and you could see the excitement on their faces. Great weather in downtown San Diego and it was up to Nadastrom to build up the vibe for what was to come. With their own signature style of Moombahton, the crowd had their hands in the air and we were all going off. Up next was 12th Planet, it’s an amazing feeling to see one of your friends doing what they do best and loving every second of it, and in front of thousands of screaming kids no less. In only a way he can, he grabbed the mic and hyped up the crowd while the first bassline tore through the park and the crowd erupted. Now, you never really know who might make an appearance at these shows, and on that note, none other than Z-Trip jumped on stage as 12th Planet’s hype man. Something you probably wont see again anytime soon. It was truly a sight to see and if you weren’t there, no worries, this tour is coming to a city near you. Every show brings something unique and special.

Up next the mighty Skrillex stepped into the highly anticipated “Skrillex Cell”. He debuted his 3D image mapping and motion capture technology and I have to say that the stage show is well up to par with Deadmau5′s Cube setup and Amon Tobin’s stunning touch designer displays. With the crowd chanting lyrics along with him, the whole stage became alive and morphed through each of Sonny’s massive tunes. Including something I had never seen implemented to a live performance setting which really makes this worth seeing. A massive digital bot/alien hovered over him and mimicked his every move. It’s action and motion being driven by Skrillex himself, it was awesome. Check out the gallery from LA photographer Alex Jacob, and the absolutely insane afterparty that took place at Voyeur Nightclub.

We struggled to pack up the next day despite a late night in San Diego and headed to San Bernardino with 12th Planet. With a history that goes back to its inception in 1995, Insomniac‘s annual Nocturnal Wonderland is always one of the highlights of our festival season here at Media Contender. Last week’s event marks the first time the event has taken on a two day format and I gotta say that by the end I was exhausted, but it was so much fun. Over 70 world class artists and god knows how many performers, and dancers took to the event’s many stages to do their thing for thousands of party-goers and was another testament to Insomniac’s constant raising of the bar.

I can’t get enough of these festivals, especially since I know the details are what make these events so special. Quality music, next-level production, great hospitality and an experience that most people have no idea exists. Insomniac always produces an environment unmatched in the world of EDM and this weekend was no different. Walking around this festival you can’t help but feel wide awake and stimulated by what’s going on around you. Our stomping grounds was the Sunken Garden which played host to the best in drum & bass and dubstep. Artists like Teebee & Calyx, Icicle, Loadstar and Breakage kept the crowd captivated their deep percussive sounds. Juxtapose that with headlining slots from Dirtyphonics (Sat) and our own 12th Planet on Friday that blew the roof off the stage and transformed the crowd into bedlam. Moshing, stage diving, and bassfaces everwhere with an energy that rivaled that of Avicii or Kaskade on the main stage. It was an awe inspiring sight it puts a smile on my face to look up at 12th Planet doing his thing with the enjoying it as much as any punter in the room. Oh, and and I can imagine part of that was due to Dizzee Rascal, Benji Madden and a row of artists that inspire him to do what he does were standing onstage in awe of how he took the tent from 1000 people to 5000 people in just a few minutes.

We had a few different photographers out who show us their interpretation of the weekend. You can also head over to the Insomniac site to check the rest of this event’s pics.

The Sunday after a 2 day festival, all I wanted to do is sleep. Unfortunately there is no rest for the wicked and we went right from Nocturnal to a ranch in the mountains off the 210 for a video shoot. The Artist; Kastle. The Song; You Know That I Know You Know. Nursing a horrific hangover I expected to be able to sit on the sidelines but that went right out the window when we arrived and the director exclaiming “Yes! More for the pie fight!”.

I couldn’t help but think that we should have gone straight home from the festival to hide but we stuck it out. That’s one thing about this crew, we’re always down for the team and it’s truly a family thing. 2 Advils and a wardrobe change later, we were all ready to do what needed to be done. Little did we know that Kastle is as out of the box visually as he is with his music. I love this dude’s creative process. We had no idea what we were walking into that afternoon but we walked away very impressed and eager to see the final product, especially considering the huge mess we made in the pie fight.

What started out clean and dry ended up with a hose down next to horses and picking whip cream out of my ears for days. Our girl Kendra was on site doing her best to document what was going on and managed to stay clean. Lucky girl.

Last Tuesday night in Santa Ana, Media Contender and SMOG relocated Dubtroit to the Galaxy Theater’s Constellation Room. The inaugural event was an Orange County Dubstep feast with a lineup consisting of Flinch, Star Eyes, Pablo Hassan, Steady, Tea Long and Kemst. Clancy and I took the trip out of LA to check out the new digs and were just as impressed as everyone else in attendance — this new stage has great promise with teeth chattering subs and an aesthetic that rivals any smaller scale venue you’ve been to.

When you have a hometown hero like 12th Planet headline a show here in Los Angeles, you know that it’s going to be crazy. Sure enough, this sold out show, a collaboration between Insomniac’s Bassrush, LA Beatdown and Los Angeles’ record label Deceast, brought the Music Box to its knees with big bass and world class talent. It’s really undeniable the love this city has for 12th Planet and that really makes us smile here at Media Contender. Adding to the hype of this night was London’s Silkie, repping the Anti Social crew and Deep Medi. It was a a treat to see him as well as Deceast’s Deco on this lineup as a perfect complement to the other sounds within Dubstep. It’s too often that a crowd is subjected to the dominant flavor, leaving those left or right of center sometimes struggling to bring their sound to the masses. We applaud those involved with this show for making sure all aspects of the sound were covered. Topping it all off was one of our favorite people and Electro House rockstar Kill The Noise. He can get eclectic when we plays live shows, alternating from his driving 4-to-the-floor anthems and obviously catering to the Dubstep crowd with some of his collaborative efforts with the likes of Datsik and Feed Me to tie it all together. All in all, this night was a blast and we want to thank everyone for making it a very special occasion. LA Beatdown resident photographer Regal D sent his gallery our way to help keep the event fresh in our minds forever.
