A blast from the past with updated sounds, Fresh Squeezed was held at the infamous Shrine Auditorium with 3 areas hosted by Media Contender’s own, Danny Johnson. The vibe was definitely electric, and yes indeed, this was a true-to-form rave complete with freaks (of every nature!), sneaks (trying to jump the gates and all!) and bass-booming speaks (oh yeah!). Me, at a rave, can you believe it? Here’s the shots to prove it!

So Jeff and I used to do this club in Hollywood called Muse, its a really cool Drum & Bass night that showcased a more progressive, musical sound. I would say it was geared towards seasoned electronic music fans. We did a really cool night with Maldini from Bad Company UK about a year ago, what made this so special was that Maldini played ALL of the old BC stuff and the place went ape shit.

Tittsworth just released his debut artist album 12 Steps on Stretch Armstrong’s label (the guy that broke Wu Tang Clan) Plant Music, this has been a long time coming. I know I have been anticipating it and telling people about it for at least a year. It’s an album filled with Bmore-influenced bangers with appearances from The Federation, Pitbull, DJ Assault and Nina Sky among others. Here is a joint off the album with Pase Rock and Kid Sister who collab on “WTF”, a rap/club/blog special.

I asked Titts if he had any interesting things happen while making the album, he told me this story about the reaction he got when he asked our boy Assault to remix a track for him.

Tittsworth:

Funny story about the dj assault track… so the song (off my debut album “12 steps”) is called “broke ass nigga” and it all started when kenny b and diamond k came thru my spot for the first time. before they showed up, i was kinda nervous about having some bmore legends come thru. i remember being like “yo, i don’t really have a very fancy mic or setup but we’ll make do?” their reply “don’t even worry about it, we’ll bring one.” man, what professionals i thought to myself. so finally they come thru and it’s about time to get busy and kenny hands me a plastic safeway bag with one of those plastic boom box mics with the cord all tangled. i mean here are cats that were on all time classics, with miss tony and all. it was at that time i was reminded what club music was and was NOT all about. i loved it.

So we hook it up, record a couple concepts, one of which becomes “broke ass nigga,” pretty self explanitory track about making fun of cats with no dough. later on stretch armstrong reaches out about doing an album. he and dom love the record and i get the idea of getting dj assault to do a remix since the comedy is a pretty close fit. man, the first time craig (assault) reached out, he was really heated!!! really on some “i can’t believe you want me to remix this.. what do you know about being black or being broke! im deeply offended and would never remix this.” a diplomatic email back and he quickly realized that i didn’t write this song, and that it was mainly my boy martin (jinxx) and kenny b, with some help from their boy frankie and our girl geina. all of them were black. me being half asian, i explained i was responsible for the beat and the recording. after that it was kool and the gang. craig’s version was so slammin, we had to put in on my debut album, “12 steps” and he’s co-headlining my album release party in dc. there are a few folks out there that really don’t get it and slammed me pretty hard for putting that song out. on the other hand, there are sites out there that REALLY don’t get it and have referred to the track as “broke ass nigger.” on an unrelated note, i was also surprised the track (correctly titled) was for sale on a very popular country and western music site.

If anything it’s all a reminder of how touchy race still is. i just hope cats dont get the wrong idea about me. i’m not loosing sleep though and i knew the risks when i decided to release it. people that know me, well, know better…

This one has an old school feel with some classic techno stabs, and comes in with some bass that will make you bounce in your car, the club, or just rollin down the street with your ipod. I love the “jungle massive” sample, cause I love that jungle techno vibe. The rave is back!

After years of learning the crafts and a few name changes, I’m finally settling into my world of freelance graphic design and photography. Though the design display is still in the idea stage, I’ve taken some time to get the photo site up and running with some of the newest galleries. Now comes the fun part of going through the archive collections and adding them one-by-one. Anyone who has ever done this knows how tediously boring it can become. But like all tasks of the sort, the end result should be well worth it.

Gina Turner and the GFK on Fairfax

This is said to be the most publicized action figure of all time. Press on the infamous Ghostface Killah Doll has been circulating the web for a couple of years now. It just saw official release early this year. Amish from 4Cast Ltd. is a friend of mine, I met him through Hochi when we were doing the TEKDBZ shows a few years ago. We have been talking about doing a GFK Doll/Art Show for quite some time. I wont give it away but I hope that still happens.

When we did Bass Sessions in LA in February I was down on Fairfax @ Turntable Lab with Klever and Tittsworth doing an interview with Gina Turner, we ran into the GFK, Amish and Clyde Singleton (professional skateboarder).

So Fresh Squeezed is creeping up on us. It seems like only last month that the anniversary show was at LA Center Studios in downtown. Over 7,000 people attended that show and the view of the crowd under the downtown skyline was amazing.

The Fresh crew is one of the only “rave” crews out of the new school generation that actually promotes great shows. I’ve been working with them on the last two shows. I actually worked with Tim aka the Freshmaker on many shows before he created Fresh in the early part of this decade. He seems to have a line into exactly what the kids want, and his decor is what sets him apart from the rest, I support that. Media Contender, Trust, MegaHertz, and United are hosting rooms and this one is at the Shrine, the place where Hard Summer Fest with N*E*R*D and MSTRKRFT was. This year they added a dubstep room and electro house room. I am all about the D&B baby. But will be bouncing back and forth between all 3 i’m sure.
